Iraq, Politics, 11/25/2002

Former Iraqi army chief of staff Nizar al-Khazraji who sought asylum to Denmark in 1996 denied accusations of war crimes addressed against him and stressed that he is a victim of a conspiracy based on lies.

Al-Khazraji said that all witnesses and evidence collected against him by the attorney are fabricated and that a Kurdish friend, who he did not disclose his identity, was called on since three months to hold a tour on Northern Iraq to gather evidence condemning him. Al-Khazraji added that this friend informed him that certain sides asked him to fabricate evidences to bring with him back to Denmark.

Al-Khazraji added from his house in the small town of Soro, in the east of Denmark, that all those witnesses are of the sort who take money for what he say ( of evidences ) or are part of the Iraqi regime in Baghdad.

Al-Khazraji who was the chief of staff of the Iraqi army on 1987- 1990 denied that the units of the Iraqi army which were under his leadership to have had chemical weapons or means to fire such weapons.

He said that such weapons were fired by the air forces or by missiles which were with the special Republican Guards (army units) which were both controlled by the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The war crimes attorney in Denmark is investigating Nizar al-Khazraji on killing thousands of Kurds in northern Iraq in attacks by the use of chemical weapons in 1988, and other crimes.
