Egypt, Economics, 11/23/2002
The Edfu oilfield in the Gulf of Suez starts this week with a capacity of 10,000 barrels per day (bdp), the recent oilfield discovered by British Petroleum (BP) last March.
ΚΚΚ Hisham Mekhawi, BP chief in Egypt, told Al-Ahram newspaper that the company is currently carrying out an intensive plan to dig four wells to prospect for natural gas in off-shore spots in the Mediterranean Sea within its new investments hitting $ 1.4 billion during the three years to come.
ΚΚΚ Total discoveries achieved by BP with its US Partner Apache and German Partner GUG reached 13 for natural gas in the Mediterranean in the past couple of years.
ΚΚΚ Total reserve of natural gas is estimated at 4.5 trillion cubic feet, said Mekhawi, adding BP gave five new offers to prospect for oil and natural gas in six areas in the Gulf of Suez and the Red Sea within the international tender to prospect for oil and gas, whose applications expired on November 4.
