Euro-deputy resigns to protest silence over Israeli policy
Palestine-European Union, Politics, 11/23/2002
Euro-deputy and former Portuguese president Mario Soares has reigned from his position as chairman of the European Parliament's delegation on relations with Israel.
According to "Europe" agency, Soares (a socialist) explained in his resignation letter to the parliament speaker, Pat Coax, and chairman of the socialist group, Enrique Baron, that he means to protest against the Israeli policy which is a catastrophe for Israel and for Palestinians.
"I have to conclude that all that the delegation's moves were exploited to reinforce the Israeli policy to which I do not adhere," said Soares.
According to press reports, Soares was facing several internal plots at the delegation he presided, including an attempt to obstruct a meeting proposal made by Soares to debate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
