Respect of freedoms, an irreversible choice, Moroccan government says
Morocco, Politics, 11/23/2002

The consolidation of the rule of law and the respect of rights and freedoms are an irreversible choice for Morocco, Moroccan Prime Minister Driss Jettou said on Thursday.

The government undertakes to continue implementing reforms and measures likely to preserve citizens' dignity and safeguard their rights and freedoms, said Jettou, who was presenting the government's program to the two chambers of the Moroccan parliament.

All actors involved, he said, should live up to their commitments towards the law, the institutions and the society.

Despite the gains Morocco already scored in matters of individual and collective freedoms and in democracy promotion, much is yet to be done to consolidate these gains, Jettou said.

Jettou stressed that the government will continue efforts to reform the judicial system to enhance its credibility and efficiency, the objective being to hoist this system to the level of modern apparatuses.

He also voiced the government's will to modernize detention centers in accordance with the instructions of King Mohammed VI with a view to improving detention conditions, safeguard inmates' dignity and ease their reintegration in society.

Preserving public order will remain one of the key responsibilities and priorities of the state, Jettou said. Individuals and groups protection, the preservation of their property, guaranteeing their security as well as the safety of their transactions, the establishment of peace and stability are sine qua non conditions for the construction of a sound, democratic and modern society, he underlined.
