Jordan, Politics, 11/23/2002

One Jordanian citizen from Maan city, Muhammad al-Khattab, pointed to houses which were hit by the shells, of tanks and machinegun bullets, and accused the Jordanian authorities of launching a war in this city.

Al-Khattab said while referring to the headquarters of the police, which looks like a castle on the other side of the street in al-Tour quarters in the city where the army armored vehicles are still stationed waiting for "such a war " -- "we are in their eyes ( of the police) terrorists against them."

Al-Khattab who said he belongs to the Islamists noted a clash took place this month between special units of the riot fighting forces and Islamist activists resulted in killing at least 7 individuals. The clash started after the terrorism fighting forces started operation in search of Islamist activists said to have links to the killing of an American diplomat in Amman in October.

Al- Khattab said about the city of Maan which is inhabited by 40,000 citizens, whose tribes are linked to close religious and cultural ties with Saudi Arabia, this is an old revenge act against Maan.
