Famine, drought in Mauritania
Mauritania, Local, 11/23/2002
Mauritania's commission for food security stressed on Thursday that the country needs more that 72,000 tons of cereals during 2003 in order to prevent famine from almost one million persons who will face very difficult conditions in January and February of 2003.
The representative of the World Food Program ( WFP) in Nouakchott, Felle Le Buffet, said that a new campaign will start to collect donations to support 42,000 persons who are effected because of the delay of the rainfall season and the rare waterfall for the third running year in Mauritania.
In September, the government of Mauritania extended a call for international aid, and distributed during the past months some 10,000 extra tons it had received from the WFP and from both Italy and France.
