Korean party opposes seoul's support for U.S.-led campaign against Iraq
Iraq-South Korea, Politics, 11/22/2002

The Democratic Labor Party (DLP) on Thursday voiced opposition to Washington's request for South Korea to provide support in the event of a U.S.-led military campaign against Iraq, Korean news agency YONHAP reports.

DLP spokesman Kim Jong-chul said "Korea's military forces or equivalent resources should not be sacrificed or exploited for the interests of the United States under any circumstances."

"The government should never accept any requests involving a U.S.-led campaign against Iraq," he added.

Meanwhile, the Korean Ministry of National Defence denied news reports that the U.S. government has asked South Korea to support any future military action against Iraq.

"We have not been officially informed of the request," a spokesman for the ministry told reporters.

However, the ministry is expected to consider rendering medical and transportation support should Washington make the request through official channels.
