Al-Seyasah: Inter- Arab consultations concerning Iraq
Regional-Iraq, Politics, 11/21/2002

Well-informed sources in Damascus told the Kuwaiti daily al-Seyasah yesterday that the short visit held by President Bashar al-Assad to Saudi Arabia and Bahrain and the surprising visit held by President Hosni Mubarak of Egypt to Syria all came in the context of inter- Arab consultations to delegate the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud, in his capacity as the chairman of the Arab summit to Baghdad.

The sources added that delegating President Lahoud aims at asking the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on the need to fully abide by precise implementation of the items of UN resolution 1441, and this is in order to avoid Iraq and the region the consequences of a destructive war. The paper indicated that this issue was the substance and very content of the message conveyed by the Syrian foreign minister Farouk al-Shara to the Lebanese President Emil Lahoud four days ago.

The sources added, However, that Lebanon has another view point embodied on what the Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hammoud has said in that UN resolution 1441 is a "booby trapped resolution" and that the American military move against Iraq is inevitable, and that the said resolution had alienated the war but did not cancel it.
