Home arrest for al-Khazraji in Denmark
Iraq-Denmark, Politics, 11/21/2002
A Danish court yesterday imposed home arrest on the Iraqi army chief of staff Nizar al-Khazraji in order to prevent him from escaping a possible trial over war crimes.
The Danish news agency said that the judge refused the request of the attorney to put the Iraqi leader, who is accused of committing crimes against the Kurds by the late of the 1980's, in jail.
Al-Khazraji led the Iraqi armed forces from 1987- 1990. He fled to Jordan in 1995 and four years later he sought political asylum in Denmark. The immigration authorities rejected the political asylum request because it found out that he was possibly involved in attacks in chemical weapons against the Kurds in northern Iraq by the end of the 1980's.
