Syria Farming Directory: A step to reach external markets

A policy of gradual reform has been contemplated in Syria, starting with a move towards indicative planning. To this effect, a number of government arrangements in the shape of legislative measures, amendments and revision of the major instruments of public intervention and wider economic and institutional reforms were made concrete both at the macro and agricultural sector levels.

Taking into consideration the major role played by the agricultural sector in Syria, in terms of share of GDP, employment, and to highlight major achievements in the area of agriculture and also to guide into further planned agriculture, the first issue of "Syria's Farming Directory" was issued recently in Damascus by Takieddin Institute- International Business Links, both in English and Arabic.

The company chairman Riad Takieddin said that this guiding directory which falls in ( 310 ) pages is the first specialized attempt aiming at introducing Syrian national companies involved in agriculture, its scope of work and contact address to the Arab and Foreign potential contacts. The ultimate goal is to strengthen the relationship and to establish a new trade links which will help the export of the crops oversupply and the agricultural inputs which are rapidly growing during the last few years.

Takieddin expressed his hope that "Syria's farming directory " will be a bridge of communication between Syrian national, Arab and Foreign agricultural companies. To achieve this goal, The book was distributed free of charge to all Syrian, Arab and International chambers of commerce and agriculture, embassies, international organizations, investment companies and authorities. For the practical fast world wide distribution the directory is displayed on the internet on the following site: www.ibl-group.com.

As this activity started to show prosperous results. Further specialized directories like Food processing directory, olive and olive oil directory, Exporters of Fruits and Vegetables directory will be published soon.

The directory is divided into four main Chapters. Each chapter is composed of the following detailed information: Chapter I includes Index of business classifications divided into importers, exporters, manufacturers and services.

Chapter II is composed of 6 sections with names of companies. Every company's name is followed by a remark where it can be found.

Chapter III contains names of companies with complete contact data in alphabetical order, regardless to the size or the legal form of the entitled company.

The first section includes lists of importers: agricultural inputs, irrigation equipment and machinery.

The second section includes lists of producers: agricultural inputs, irrigation inputs, accessories and machinery.

The third section includes lists of services providers: retailers, landscaping, consultants, marketing, exhibitions and transport companies The fourth section includes lists of concerned authorities, investment companies, and research centers.

The fifth section includes short list of exporters of F AND V and agricultural crops exporters.

The Six section includes lists of livestock dealers; poultry, equipment, veterinary products and feed trading and processing.

Chapter IV contains names of companies in alphabetical order with indication remark.

Among the pioneering Syrian companies shown in the directory is al- Khatib Poultry of an annual production of 2 million Broiler parent stock -- 15 million Broiler Hatching Eggs -- 80 million Table Egg -- 50,000 Mt Pelted Feed. The slaughtering plant is producing Baladi chicken -- Blast frozen Broiler in whole and cuttings.

The Khatib company is searching for external markets for its products.

Al-Tahhan Inst. for pesticides and fertilizers is another pioneering company, formulating agricultural inputs in Syria since 1975. The company's products of pesticides include public health insecticides; agricultural insecticides; ectoparasiticide for veterinary use and rodenticides.

The company's products of fertilizers include NPK+ Micro nutrients in various combinations and micro nutrients in the forms of liquid and powder.

The Homs- based " Syrian feed Co." factory is a newly established one in the area of feed processing for ruminants animals. It produces both concentrated fodder and amended nutritive value fodder ( cows, sheep, goats, camels, buffaloes, horses ) with special and specific requirements that can also be met.

The Arab company for the Manufacturing of Advanced Irrigation Equipment MAIE ) was established in accordance with the Law no. 10 for encouraging investment 1991. MAIE is a share holding company, created by the league of the Arab investors, one of them is the Arab Board for investment and rural development. The company's goal is to produce and encourage farmers to use modern drip irrigation systems to attain rational use of waters and develop the applied irrigation methods.

Early 2000 MAIE started production of drip irrigation systems compatible with the most advanced universal techniques and under the international standards applicable in force. These products are low density polyethylene pipes fitted with GR drippers sizes available 16 and 20 mm; and traditional irrigation pipes used with external drippers.
