Morocco's Communication Minister Vows to Solve Media Problems
Morocco, Politics, 11/18/2002

Moroccan communication minister, Nabil Benabdellah vowed to solve problems facing the Moroccan media.

Benabdellah, who is also government spokesman, called for a full-fledged communication policy and urged Moroccan journalists to further commit themselves to the reforms being implemented in Morocco.

The Moroccan press on Friday celebrated a National Information Day

Benabdellah, who noted "difficult conditions" in which media professionals live, said the commemoration of the Moroccan Information and Communication Day offers the opportunity to assess, "in a positive spirit," the current situation of the Moroccan media sector.

Secretary General of the Moroccan National Press Union, Younes Moujahid said print media is moving from a stage where it was relatively dominated by partisan press to another one marked by private initiative. He added that the liberalization of audiovisual sector, and by the same, the end of State's monopoly, is in the offing.

This liberalization must, however, be undertaken according to the book of requirements that provides for pluralism, and high quality standards to better serve the Moroccan society, he added.

He also stressed that public press enterprises must continue providing public service and fulfil a pioneering role with regard to the consolidation of the freedom of expression.
