Al-Assad in Bahrain, Saudi Arabia: UN resolution 1441 alienated the war
Syria-Regional, Politics, 11/18/2002

Syria's President Bashar al-Assad yesterday held a visit to Bahrain and Saudi Arabia during which he met on Sunday evening with King Fahd and with the crown prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz and held talks in the two states on the debated American plan for finding a settlement in occupied Palestine. Al-Assad also held talks on the Syrian position at the UN Security Council and Iraq's acceptance of the UN resolution 1441 and the return back of UN inspectors.

Syrian diplomats who asked to be anonymous told the press that al-Assad discussed with the Saudi crown prince in addition to the deteriorated conditions in the Palestinian territories the question of Syria's voting for UN resolution 1441 concerning Iraq.

The diplomats indicated that Syria received American and international guarantees that the resolution does not allow on the use of force spontaneously.

The two Saudi and Syrian side, chaired by King Fahd and President Bashar al-Assad, held a meeting in Riyadh during which they discussed current conditions in the Middle East region, foremost being the Palestinian question and the practices conducted against the Palestinian people.

The two side renewed their continued stand in support of the Palestinian people so as to restore back their legitimate rights to their lands and the foundation of their own independent state. They reviewed latest developments on the Arab, Islamic and international arenas as well as prospects of cooperation between the two states in all fields.

Earlier in the day the president held a visit to Manama that lasted for several hours where he held talks with King of Bahrain.

The two states announced their welcome of Iraq's decision to accept the UN security council resolution 1441. They expressed their hope that this resolution will be conducive to "ending tension in the region avoiding military confrontation," according to the Bahraini news agency.

According to SANA, the two sides expressed their "satisfaction over Iraq's acceptance of UN Security Council resolution 1441. A matter which helped the alleviation of tension in the region and alienate the ghost of war from it." Bahrain's news agency said that Sheikh Hamad stressed Bahrain's unwavering position on the need of Israel's complete withdrawal from the occupied Syrian Golan heights and from all other occupied Arab territories until June 4, 1967 border lines.
