Arab states ask for buying Turkish waters
Regional-Turkey, Politics, 11/16/2002
The Turkish authorities yesterday stressed that contacts between it and Israel are still ongoing on what is known as "Managfat project for peace waters" and that these contacts seem positive, but the two sides are waiting the political climate to be clarified in the two countries in order to finalize the deal and start exporting waters to Israel.
High ranking officials at the Turkish official waters company told the Anadolia news agency that certain Mediterranean states such as Egypt, Libya, Jordan and Greece asked unofficially for buying Managfat waters in the framework of the same project. They added that there is no information or new changes on the "peace water" projects since the meeting took place between the two sides just one month ago.
They added that a Turkish delegate will head very shortly to Israel to discuss this issue but is waiting for the formation of a new government in Turkey and appointing a new minister of energy and natural resources.
Since there will be early elections in Israel within weeks, the Turkish officials said "the political climate in Israel is expected to become clear in both Turkey and Israel."
