Completing border demarcation in Eastern area between Saudi Arabia, Yemen

The chairman of the Yemeni side to the border committee between Saudi Arabia and Yemen, Abdullah al-Fadli, said that the committee will meet on November 25 in Jeddah to discuss matters relating to the process of field work for the new border marks project, according to the international border treaty between Saudi Arabia and his country.

The Yemeni official told "September 26" paper which is published by the Yemeni ministry of defense that the German Harnezlot has completing installing border markers in the eastern and the desert area.

He added that total number of these markers which were installed on the border in this area is 273 markers. This line, however, extends from the meeting point of the Saudi- Yemeni, Omani borders until Jabal al-Thaar, and these markers are composed of 15 main markers and 166 signals; 150 of which are branch markers and 42 border signals.

He, on the other hand, indicted that work is ongoing in the area which extends from Alabn until Jabal al-Tha'ar. This area, however, is considered the most difficult in the Yemeni- Saudi borders concerning geography and mountainous landscape, and that to work in this area, helicopter planes will be used to facilitate the work.

Number of markers in the mountainous and western area which extends from Jabaal al-Thaar until the coast of the Red Sea reached 293 border markers and 50% of these markers have so far been installed.

Al-Fadli said that the German company which executes the border markers project completed the third phase of Ariel photographing of borders between the two states, according to which the new border maps will be laid. He expected technical and field work to demarcate borders between Saudi Arabia and Yemen to be completed by the first half of 2003.

On the other hand, it was announced in Sanaa on Thursday that the Yemeni ministry of the interior secretary for the security sector will visit Saudi Arabia in order to preside over the Yemeni side to the committee of organizing border authorities between Yemen and Saudi Arabia by the beginning of next week.

Official sources said that Lt. Gen. Abdullah al-Qawmi will discuss with the Saudi officials issues pertinent to organizing works of the border authorities concerning border crossing and security patrols in the border areas between Saudi Arabia and Yemen as well as cooperation in these areas and in fighting smuggling and preserving the security and safety of borders.
