Amnesty International condemns torture practices in Egyptian jails
Egypt, Politics, 11/14/2002

Amnesty International yesterday condemned the torture practices applied generally and systematically against prisoners in Egypt.

In a statement the organization said that every and each detained person in Egypt faces the danger of torture, noting that information reveals that torture is a general and regular practice despite the fact that the Egyptian legislation and the international law ban the torture of detainees.

The statement said that methods used in torture are slapping by the belt on the back; electricity, beating and suspension from hands and legs, adding that the accusations of practicing torture and maltreatment in Egypt comes from men, children and political activists or any person who is detained in the context of a judicial investigation.

The statement added that the refugees and persons detained because of their sexual inclination are the most vulnerable for maltreatment, while most of political prisoners suffer bad treatment upon arresting them in secret at the intelligence centers.

Amnesty International also said that those who commit these violations are not punish. In this regard the organization said that in most cases no body is brought before the court and no comprehensive and subjective investigations are made, noting that just very few police men were jailed in accusations of that sort.

Worthy mentioning that the organization will next Wednesday and Thursday discuss the periodical report of the Egyptian government on that case.
