Sudan-Regional, Politics, 11/13/2002

The Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael said yesterday following his talks with the secretary general of the Arab League Amr Moussa that Sudan had officially asked the Arab League to inform Eritrea not to interfere in the Sudanese affairs.

Ismael added that Sudan is careful to maintain historical relations with neighboring Eritrea, and that the Sudanese people had a remarkable role in support the struggle mounted by the people of Eritrea." Ismael also called on the Eritrean leadership to replace the years of tension by years of cooperation and good neighborliness.

On Sunday, the Arab foreign ministers issued a statement denouncing Eritrea's building up of forces along the borders with Sudan.

In their statement, the Arab FM s called on Eritrea to "honor sovereignty and territorial integrity of Sudan and non- interference in its internal affairs."
