AL council discuss means of supporting the fund of rebuilding southern Sudan
Regional-Sudan, Politics, 11/11/2002
The Arab special committee on Sudan yesterday held its first meeting at the ministerial level at the headquarters of the Arab League (AL) general secretariat. The committee discussed means of reactivating the fund for rebuilding southern Sudan and other relating issues, according to a source at the AL.
The committee which was approved by the AL ministerial council in September includes Egypt, Syria, Sudan, Algeria, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Libya, Yemen and the UN chief.
The Beirut's Arab summit approved in March "the establishment of the Fund for promoting southern Sudan at a capital of 450 million dollars, but the AL has not yet received any contributions for the Fund." The secretary general of the people's committee for African unity in Libya, Ali Abdul Salaam al-Tureiki, whose country threatens to withdraw from the Arab League said that Tripoli supports the convening of an urgent Arab summit "because the situation requires the convening of an urgent summit," noting that there are several Arab countries which approve that, including the Arab Maghreb states."
Meantime, a source in the Arab League said that the Arab follow up committee of Saturday evening discussed the American "road map" to settle the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis and the implications of forming the new rightist Israeli government.
The committee which includes 10 foreign ministers was commissioned to follow up the implementation of the Beirut's summit resolutions which was held in March, especially regarding the financial aids to the Palestinian authority.
