Syria and voting on the US- British draft bill
Syria-Iraq, Politics, 11/9/2002

News reports quoted the assistant of the Syrian ambassador at the UN Faisal Miqdad as saying to the press that some of his country's proposals concerning voting on the US- British draft bill concerning Iraq yesterday were accepted, but he is still waiting for instructions from Damascus.

Diplomats said they believe that every country member in the US Security Council, except Syria will vote "yes" for the draft bill. However, British ambassador at the United Nations, Sir Jeremy Greenstock, said that not all member states at the UN have announced their consent yet.

Meantime, the London- based al-Hayat daily reported yesterday in news from Damascus that the Syrian leadership is making internal consultation and with allied sides to Damascus before taking its final decision to vote at the UN Security Council on the UN draft bill concerning Iraq, expecting that Syria will not take its final decision before the meeting of the Arab foreign ministers which will be held next Sunday.

The paper indicated that Syria's permanent representative at the UN Mikhael Wahba has returned to Damascus to hold consultations and get final instruction in the stand he will take at the UN Security Council as Syria is not a permanent member in it.

The paper quoted Syrian officials as asserting Syria's commitment to reject voting a resolution that legitimize an aggression against Iraq.
