Khartoum permits Eritrean opposition to open offices in Sudan
Sudan-Eritrea, Politics, 11/6/2002
The Sudanese government has permitted Eritrea's opposition to open three offices in Khartoum and Port Sudan and Kasla in order to run political and media campaigns against the regime of Eritrea's President Asyas Afourki and the ruling People's Front in Eritrea.
Abdullah Idris, the chairman of the opposition Eritrea's national alliance -- which includes 13 opposition groups, said that the opposition will join along with the people of Eritrea in a fierce battle against Afourki who will be toppled very soon. He added in a press conference that Eritrea is witnessing hard times at the political and security levels, and that the opposition is at the meantime is concentrating on mobilizing people and is making use of the relations with the neighboring states and the European Union.
Idris also called on the US to side with the Eritrean alliance which he said represents all groups of the people of Eritrea.
He explained that the Eritrean army is in a state of partition, and that there are thousands who fled to Ethiopia and Sudan. He warned against the continuation of such conditions that might drive to formation of militias like in Somalia.
