Iraq shows openness to a new resolution, thanks Saudi Arabia for reject US use of its bases
Iraq-Saudi Arabia-Austria, Politics, 11/5/2002
The Iraqi President Saddam Hussein yesterday announced that Baghdad " will consider " any resolution to be issued by the UN security council " that does not give a cover for the "bad American intentions" and " honors Iraq's sovereignty, security and independence."
During his meeting with the Austrian rightist leader Yurg Haider who is currently visiting Baghdad, he said " if any resolution issued honoring the UN charter, the international law and Iraq's sovereignty, security and independence and does not give a cover for the bad American intention, we will consider it in the framework that make us deal with it despite the fact that we see there is no need for a UN security council resolution."
Hussein added that the " Americans always create reasons in an attempt to lie to the American and world public opinion." In remarks to the American accusations against Baghdad of having the mass destruction weapons, he said "we know we did not produce anything and if we had produced any thing we will have stated that." Baghdad yesterday praised the Saudi Arabian position which rejects the use of its military bases for the American forces in Saudi Arabia to attack Iraq, at a time the Baghdad's international Fair witnesses visits to high ranking Iraqi officials to the Saudi pavilion to the fair and praised relations between the two states.
This was made on the sideline of the statement made by the Saudi foreign minister prince Saud al-Faisal on Sunday on not permitting the use of the Saudi bases to attack Iraq even if a UN security council was issued to using the force against Baghdad.
The Iraqi minister of culture Hamid Youssef Hammadi said that " this position is appreciated for Saudi Arabia because it complies with the inter- Arab solidarity and with the resolutions of the Arab summit which was held in Beirut in March." Hammadi stressed that " Iraq is ready to resist any aggression against it and will defense its freedom and independence." Hammadi considered that the US President George Bush is " determined to launch an aggression against Iraq whether a resolution issued by the UN security council or not."
For his part, the Deputy Chairman of Revolution Command Council Izzat Ibrahim described Saudi Arabia's Crown Prince Abdullah Ibn Abdul Aziz as "the closest brother and friend for myself and heart in the Arab nation after President Saddam Hussein." Ibrahim said during his visit to the Saudi pavilion at the Baghdad's International Fair said that the large Saudi participation in this fair "represents the spirit of amity, fraternity and history and geography the people of Iraq and Saudi Arabia are living on." Saudi Arabia is taking part in the activities of the Baghdad's international fair by a trade and industrial delegation including 155 figures representing more than 40 Saudi companies.
