Washington apologizes over one US plane violation of the Syrian airspace
Syria-USA, Politics, 11/5/2002

The US yesterday apologized over one of its plane's violation of the Syrian airspace while flying over the so-called "no fly zone" in northern Iraq.

A spokesman for the US airforces working in the Turkish Ancerlik base Scott Kofod said that "An F 16 (jet fighter) violated its track and flew in the Syrian airspace while heading from the Turkish base to the no fly zone in Iraq," He added that the American leadership in Ancerlink ordered the plane to immediately get out of the Syrian airspace and " return back to the base."

No statements were issued by Damascus to this effect. Kofod said that the Iraqi anti aircraft missiles opened fire at the American planes in the northern no fly zones but the latter have not retaliated.
