On the Tigris and the Euphrates
Syria-Turkey, Politics, 11/4/2002

The Turkish daily Star said Saturday that the Arab states led by Syria and in support of Iraq has practiced a continuous pressure against Turkey and succeeded in embarrassing it repeatedly at the international level especially concerning the Tigris and the Euphrates rivers.

In its Saturday's editorial, the paper said that the Arab states are now facing the same question Turkey already had. It explained that Lebanon and Israel are witnessing tension over al-Wazzani river which springs from the Lebanese territories and pours in a lake in Israel.

The paper added that Turkey is watching the Israeli- Lebanese conflict over al-Hasbani river happily and with an open appetite, and is preparing to use the Lebanese view point concerning this issue as an evidence at the international levels proving its view point concerning the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The paper added that Ankara is planning to show up this file in the first time Syria asks to hold discussions with Turkey over the question of waters.

For its part, the Turkish daily Shafaq said that the Israeli- Lebanese conflict over waters is reflected positively on Turkey which could not justify its view points concerning the Tigris and the Euphrates for many years.

The paper also expected that Turkey will use the decision to be issued by the Arab League concerning al-Wazzani river during this month, for its own interests at the international level concerning the Tigris and the Euphrates.
