Talibani: The US will try 30 Iraqi officials as war criminals
Iraq-Syria, Politics, 11/4/2002
The leader of the Kurdistani National Federation party Jalal al-Talibani has announced that the US administration has prepared a list including the names of 30 Iraqi officials to try them as war criminals in the Hague.
In a statement to the correspondent of the London- based al-Hayat daily in Damascus, issued yesterday, al-Talibani recommended the Iraqi president give up authority and the setting for a democratic transformation in Iraq in order to avoid the American attack.
After he had stressed that there are three scenarios for making a change in Iraq, he expected the change to be made in coordination with the Iraqi opposition rather than the American invasion or coordination with regional forces.
Al-Talibani called on the opposition conference due to be held on November 20 in Brussels to declare a provisional government in Baghdad.
On his talks in Damascus, al-Talibani said that the graveness of the situation requires from "us serious consultation with our brothers in Syria" in addition to eliminating certain misunderstanding that used to be prevailed on the reality of our position.
Al-Talibani was asked about the Syrian- Iranian coordination with his party in the coming phase, and he said that there is a string linking these talks for which "I want to make assurances to Syria and Iran that there is no plans for a Kurdish separation war." He added that he had informed the Syrian officials that his party is a unionist Iraqi force against partitioning Iraq or separating from it.
He expressed his firm thinking that the Iraqi regime will not be able to standstill for 6 years in confrontation with the Americans.
