Jordan: arresting extremists of Palestinian origin
Jordan-USA, Politics, 10/31/2002
Three days following the assassination of the American diplomat Laurence Folley, no arrest has yet been made in Jordan, and the Jordanian investigators, who are cooperating with the Americans, have not yet found any serious evidence leading them to the doer.
The Jordanian minister of information Muhammad al-Edwan said that "Many persons were arrested and interrogated since Monday immediately after the assassination act, but no serious evidence has been so far appeared." He said "so far, there is no real evidence or any suspect, but the police is following up all lines." The acts of arrests target Islamists, while certain members that belong to Palestinian groups are not ruled out.
News reports said that most of the Jordanian detainees are Palestinians belong to extremist cells.
Folley's body was transported by an American military plane to the USA following a short farewell procession at the Marka military port. The body was accompanied by the assistance for the US secretary general for the Middle East Affairs William Burns who was his country's ambassador in Amman until 2001, besides the wife of the diplomat Virginia Folley.
