Libya-Italy, Politics, 10/30/2002

In conclusion of a bilateral summit held yesterday in Tripoli, both Libya and Italy announced the end of the war "and the beginning of peace" between them.

The two countries stressed "their mutual feelings of friendship and the desire to cooperate and to look forward towards the future." A joint statement issued in conclusion of the visit held by the Italian prime minister Silvio Berloskony to Libya said that the two sides stressed the grave situation in the region and expressed their great concern over the deteriorated conditions of the Palestinians in the occupied territories and called for the implementation of UN security council resolutions concerned.

The two sides also expressed their concern over the Iraqi issue and called for finding out a peaceful solution in the context of the UN considering that improving the level of confidence will contribute to solving the Iraqi issue.

Berloskony described his meeting with the leader Qathafi as very important. In a pre- departure statement from Tripoli, he said that his meeting with Qathafi was very important. He added "we have finalized an agreement to, at last, put the past, ... and to confirm the feelings of friendships between our two sides and our desire to look forward to the future." He added " al-Qathafi seemed to me a wise person who is anxious over the current international condition and is inclined to maintain friendship relations, even with me and this is a great honor for me."
