Sudan arrests 60 Eritreans, Northern parties want in on Mashakos
Sudan, Politics, 10/30/2002

The Umma party in Sudan led by former prime minister al-Sadeq al-Mahdi announced he proposed a request to the Sudanese government to amend the agreement under discussions in Mashakos that provides for ending the war taking place in Sudan since 19 years.

However, the Sudanese government refused this request, noting that the northern opposition parties are not concerned with the negotiations which includes the parties of the southern opposition parties and the Sudanese government.

The main opposition parties in northern Sudan are facing split over the negotiations between the government and the rebels under the leadership of Gen. John Garang.

Member of the political bureau of the Umma party Sara al-Fadel al-Mahdi ( al-Mahdi's second wife) said that that party accepts "peace and we do exert all efforts in order to be involved in the events by peaceful means." She added that the participation of the northern parties in the negotiations is a very important matter because "amendments should be introduced on several issues in Mashakos," where the negotiations are taking place.

Al-Mahdi announced that the party stated their proposals "But the government and Garang refuse that because they want to control this operation." Sara al-Mahdi continued that "any likely political agreement will fail unless attended by all political forces." Meantime, a delegation representing Eritrea's opposition arrived in Khartoum yesterday in order to revive its activities as from Sudan, according to member in the delegation Muhammad Taher. The Eritrean delegation is headed by the secretary general for the Eritrea's national forces alliance Tidla Bayro.
