Failing to change Qathafi's position, AL chief consults Arab leaders on Libya's withdrawal from AL
Libya-Regional, Politics, 10/28/2002
The secretary general of the Arab League AL Amr Moussa has started consultations with the Arab leaders over Libya's request to pullout from the AL after he had failed to convince Tripoli to backtrack from its decision.
The spokesman for the Arab League in Cairo Hesham Youssef said that Moussa, who on Saturday paid a short visit to Libya met with Libya's Leader of the Revolution Colonel Muammar al Qathafi, will hold intensive contacts with the Arab leaders on demands of the Libyan leader on the need of finding out a united Arab position towards dealing with the threats imposed on the Arab states from threats, attacks, and pressures, be it on Iraq, or the Arab- Israeli conflict, or the situation in Sudan."
The statement which was circulated upon the return back of the AL chief to Cairo said that Moussa will brief the Libyan leader with the results of his consultations and will not at the meantime submit the Libyan request on its pullout to the AL council.
In the statement, Moussa stressed that Libya's position came as an expression of the state of frustration and anger over the current Arab conditions and the importance of developing Arab work quickly in order to withstand the current grave threats." Earlier, Moussa announced in Tripoli that he did not succeed in convincing the Libyan side of giving up the decision to pullback for the AL. He added that "consultations are still continuous with the Libyans" to this effect. Moussa said that the "Libyan decision is a message for the Arab nation (that it has) to respond." The Libyan news agency said that the Sudanese foreign minister Mustafa Othman Ismael is also in Tripoli in an attempt to convince the Libyan officials to back away from their decision.
For its part MENA ( the Middle East News Agency ) said that Col. Qathafi on Saturday made a telephone call with the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and discussed with him the Iraqi issue and the Palestinian question.
