Bousta: Turkish officials on the creation of a Kurdish state in northern Iraq
Iraq-Turkey, Politics, 10/28/2002
The Turkish officials who supervise planning of the Turkish police in northern Iraq stressed that it is impossible for the Kurds of northern Iraq to declare their independence, or to subjugate Karkouk city under their control and make of it a capital for them, unless they obtain the support of Washington, Damascus, Tehran and Ankara.
In a telephone call with the Turkish daily Bousta, the Turkish officials indicated in its Saturday's issue that Washington gave guarantees to Ankara that a Turkish state will not be established, stressing that it is impossible that the US will sacrifice its good relations with Turkey for the sake of founding an independent Kurdish state in the after- Saddam phase.
The Turkish officials added that Turkey has to develop its relations with Masoud al-Barazani, the leader of the Kurdistani democratic party, so as to be able to prevent a likely migration of the Iraqi refugees into inside the Turkish territories in case the US launches war against Iraq.
