Gulf defense ministers meet today on strengthening military coordination
Gulf, Military, 10/28/2002

The defense ministers of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states will discuss today in Muscat, Oman, means of strengthening and developing military cooperation among their member states.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Riyadh, the GCC secretary general Abdul Rahman al-Ateyah said that the ministers will discuss means of revitalizing the common Arab defense agreement, following up issues concerning it, as well as developing the al-"Jazira Shield " and military projects. These projects are the insured communications, "the cooperation belt," the Gulf reconnaissance satellite, the military exercises ( land, air and sea ) as well as other fields of military cooperation relations.

During their recent summit by the end of 2000, the Gulf leaders signed the GCC common defense agreement and also decided to raise the number of al-Jazira Shield forces( which is the joint military forces of the GCC) from 5,000 troopers to 22,000 and to provide them with sophisticated weapons and equipment.
