Lebanon asks for a list of its released citizens in Iraq

The Lebanese foreign minister Mahmoud Hammoud stressed on Wednesday that Lebanon had asked the Iraqi authorities for a list including the names of the Lebanese who were released according to a general amnesty approved by the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein on Sunday for Iraqi and Arab prisoners.

Hammoud told journalists that he had asked his Iraqi counterpart Naji Sabri to give a list in the names of the released Lebanese.

Hammoud also indicated that he asked the Lebanese charge de affairs to Iraq, Wafiq Rheimi, to make contacts with authorities concerned on the same issue.

The Iraqi President Saddam Hussein announced general amnesty after his winning of a referendum in the mid of October for renewing his post of office for another 7 year term of office.

Worthy mentioning that there are no official figures about the number of Lebanese held in Iraq. According to the committee of the Lebanese detainees families in the Iraqi jails which published their names in 2001 with many of them detained since 1980 with most of them arrested between 1990- 1991 and they are mainly scholars in al-Najaf.

The said committee had asked the Lebanese official authorities to release them on the wake of Lebanon's resumption of its diplomatic relations with Iraq in March 2001.
