Iraqis ask for prisoners who did not appear after the Presidential Pardon
Iraq, Politics, 10/24/2002

Iraqis have been gathered since two days in front of a headquarters of the Iraqi police in one on Baghdad's quarters to find out about the fate of relatives presumed to be governed by the Amnesty issued by the Iraqi President, but so far they have not appeared.

Following a similar gathering held two days earlier in front of the building of the ministry of information for the same purpose, news reports said that hundreds of Iraqis are gathering in front of a police center to know the fate of relatives who did not show up following the Presidential Amnesty last Sunday. The news reports said that the gathered people came from Baghdad and other Iraqi areas, and many of them said they spend their nights in front of the center since Sunday.

The Iraqi opposition national reconciliation ( al-Wifaq al-Watani) movement led by Eyad Alawi said that the Presidential Amnesty is a "big lie." He indicated that the Amnesty included Abu Gharib prison of the "public rights prisoners" and ignored other prisons of political detainees including the jails of al-Ridwaneyah, Badoush, Baqouba, the prisons of the Olympic committee, the control camps of the ministry of the interior and that of the intelligence in Hakemeyah.
