Russian trawlers to resume fishing in Morocco, Russia says
Morocco-Russia, Economics, 10/18/2002
Russia on Thursday announced that its trawlers will resume fishing in Moroccan waters under an accord signed with Morocco during the official visit King Mohammed VI paid to Moscow this week.
The accord allows Russian ships to operate in Moroccan territorial waters in the Atlantic ocean, Russian news agency (Itar-Tass) said, quoting the Russian State Committee for Fisheries, which stands for the Ministerial authority.
The Moroccan side will set the volume of catches of the species to be fished as well as the number of Russian trawlers to operate in Moroccan grounds, while the Russian side undertakes to pay an annual compensation against fishing rights.
The new accord replaces a former fisheries accord that expired in 1999. Since then, the two sides held several negotiations rounds that climaxed with the new accord, signed Tuesday in Moscow.
