Morocco's GDP jumps to 6.5 percent in 2001, UN says
Morocco, Economics, 10/17/2002

Morocco's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) achieved a remarkable growth from 0.9 in 2000 to 6.5 percent in 2001, says the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA).

ECA said the rise in Morocco's GDP was scored largely due to a positive agricultural season and to the structural adjustment policy adopted by the government.

ECA is the regional arm of the United Nations, mandated to support the economic and social development of its 53 member States, foster regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa's development.

Established in 1958 and based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, ECA is one of five regional economic commissions under the administrative direction of the UN Headquarters. It reports directly to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) through the Conference of African Ministers Responsible for Economic and Social Development and Planning, and convenes a number of intergovernmental organs and committees.

The ECA said the Moroccan government adopted measures to diversify economy in a bid to avoid excessive dependence on agriculture, which relies on fluctuating climate.

The UN body also welcomed the government's efforts to integrate the Moroccan economy in world market. This commitment is found in the policy enforced to gain foreign investors, ECA said.
