Moussa, Patten hold a joint press conference
Regional-European Union, Politics, 10/16/2002
The secretary general of the Arab League (AL) Amr Moussa has stressed the need of reaching a diplomatic settlement for the Iraqi file especially after Iraq had shown readiness to cooperate with the UN weapons inspectors.
In a joint press conference he held on Tuesday in Cairo following his talks with Chris Patten, European commissioner for foreign relations, Moussa added that the UN weapons inspectors should head immediately for Iraq in order to work for completing the execution of UN Security Council resolutions, concerned.
Moussa, on the other hand, warned against the continued deteriorated conditions in the occupied Palestinian territories, noting that this will adversely affect stability in the region as a whole.
For his part, Patten expressed his hope to reach a peaceful solution for the Iraqi issue through diplomatic channels, stressing that the best solution in this regard lies in the return back of the UN inspectors.
Concerning the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, Patten called on Israel to abide by international resolutions and stop all its practices which violate principles of the international law, foremost being the building of settlement. He stressed that these Israeli practices will not contribute to ensuring security for Israel.
