Aleppo hosts its third Terry Fox Run for cancer research; Damascus Run

The Terry Fox Advisory Committee, with the support of the Embassy of Canada in Damascus and the Consulate of Canada in Aleppo have hosted the 3rd annual terry Fox Run for cancer research in Aleppo on September 27, 2002.

This worthwhile event was held by the Syrian cancer Society Against Cancer in Aleppo. The four- kilometer run, which began and ended at the Grand House hotel, attracted more than four hundred enthusiastic participants. Over 11,000 dollars was raised for cancer research through corporate sponsors and donations, exceeding the proceeds of last year's event. The 11th Annual Damascus Terry Fox Run will take place on October 18, 2002 starting from the Sheraton Hotel.

Terry Fox was a young Canadian who lost his right leg to cancer. While in hospital, he witnessed the suffering of cancer patients and resolved to help others. His plan was to encourage the world to go on in its effort to find a cure for cancer. To do this he decided to run across the vast country of Canada. Terry started his journey on April 12, 1980 to raise the public's awareness about cancer and increase donations towards cancer research. He was able to achieve only half of his goal, running 3,339 miles in 144 days, before succumbing to the cancer that had by then invaded his lungs. Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981 exactly one month shy of his 23rd birthday. His dream however, lives on. In 2002, the 20th anniversary of Terry Fox Run, more than 1.5 million people participated in the Terry Fox run in 58 countries around the world, raising CDN$ 7.5 million for cancer research.

By placing great emphasis on cancer awareness, the Aleppo Run has certainly helped to keep Terry' dream alive. The proceeds of this year's Run will go to the funding of an approved cancer research project in Aleppo. As with previous Terry Fox Runs, the success of this year's event was in great part due to the efforts of the team of volunteers who donated their time and energy to organize the Run.
