Gulf secretary general to visit Kuwait on Sunday
Kuwait-Gulf, Politics, 10/11/2002
The secretary general of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) will on Sunday start a visit to Kuwait during which he will be meeting with high ranking Kuwaiti officials.
In a statement to the Kuwaiti News agency issued on Thursday Abdul Rahman Bin Hamad al-Ateyah said that his visit falls in the course of coordination and consultation with the "Kuwaiti brothers" on the joint GCC march as well as to discuss current conditions in the region.
He indicated he followed up the recent events which took place in Filka island in Kuwait and described what had happened as a terrorist act. He stressed his denunciation to such acts which are not in compliance with the moral values of the Gulf and their traditions.
In his statement, the GCC secretary general also stressed that terrorism constitutes a grave danger on human life and threatens the basic rights of the individual and a violation of human rights. He called on the international community to deter terrorism and eliminate it.
Replying to a question on the position of the GCC member states concerning the likely American military attacks against Iraq, Abdul Rahman al-Ateyah indicated that the Gulf member states stressed in earlier statements rejection to direct a military attack against Iraq. He said "we, in the GCC consider any military attack against Iraq a reason for more sufferings for the Iraqi people and a reason for non- stability in the region and a threat to its security." He explained that the GCC considers that peace and security in the region is a common interest for Iraq and all countries of the region. He stressed, on the other hand, that Iraq has to implement all UN Security Council resolutions especially those regarding the release of the Kuwaiti prisoners and the return back of the Kuwaiti properties.
He said that Iraq has to be sincere regarding such resolutions in order to avoid the Iraqi people and the region the implications. He stressed that the issue of releasing the Kuwaiti prisoners is on top of the priorities of the GCC.
