Driss Jettou appointment prime minister of Morocco
Morocco, Politics, 10/10/2002

Morocco's King Mohammed VI, accompanied by Prince Moulay Rachid, received Wednesday at the Royal Palace in Marrakesh, Driss Jettou, whom the king appointed Prime Minister, in accordance with Article 24 of the Constitution, spokesman for the Royal Palace, Hassan Aourid, said.

"The king entrusted the Prime Minister (Jettou) with proceeding to large consultations with the different political formations with a view to forming, in light of the results of the legislative elections of September 27, 2002, a governmental majority, gathered around an action program that meets the real expectations of the Moroccan people, as democratically expressed in the context of the September 27 poll," the spokesman said.

The spokesman added "the king stressed that the coming years will be crucial for our country. The coming government should lead with rigor and celerity important reforms that Morocco needs in various fields, particularly economic and social ones. Morocco also needs in this crucial phase the commitment of all political trends of the Moroccan society and the participation of the best among its children in the management of public affairs."

The spokesman added that the king stressed the paramount necessity to form a government of action, mobilized around clear priorities and keen on efficiency, a hard-working government, listening to the population and close to them.

"H.M. the King assured Driss Jettou of his trust and wished him full success in the mission vested on him," Aourid said.

King Mohammed VI had received Abderrahmane Youssoufi, to whom the king paid homage for his action as Prime Minister and for the important role he played for the success of the alternation experience, decided by the late King Hassan II, Aourid said.

Youssoufi served as Prime Minister since 1998. He led a center-left coalition government of seven political parties.

The Royal Palace spokesman said King Mohammed VI thanked Youssoufi for his personal commitment during this important (alternation) stage in deepening Morocco's democratic process.

The king voiced his great esteem and high consideration for Abderrahmane Youssoufi, whose patriotic credit is now greater.

King Mohammed VI underlined that in order to fulfill coming missions involving the Nation's supreme interests, Morocco and its King count on the patriotism, self-denial and statesmanship sense that Abderrahmane Youssoufi showed, the spokesman said.
