Parties Intensify consultation, on poll morrow
Morocco, Politics, 10/9/2002
After the legislative elections of September 27, Moroccan political parties are intensifying consultation in quest of possible alliances, crucial for the formation of a new government.
The Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), which topped the legislative poll with 50 seats in the future 325-seat House of Representatives, joined with five other parties, namely the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS, 11 seats), the Socialist Democratic Party (PSD, six seats), the Al-Ahd Party (5 seats), the Democratic Union (UD, 10 seats) and the Democratic Forces Front (FFD, 12 seats).
The six organizations said in a release they decided to "continue working hand in hand within the parliament and in other fronts to serve the supreme interests of the nation and consolidate the regime founded on constitutional, democratic and social monarchy."
In another development, The Democratic Social Movement (MDS, 7 seats) on Tuesday called its MPs to join the group to be formed by the Popular Movement (MP, 27 seats) and the National Popular Movement (MNP, 18 seats) in the House of Representatives.
MP and MNP had sent a letter to the MDS to join the reunification call launched by the two parties.
