Three parties to form single group at parliament
Morocco, Politics, 10/8/2002
Three parties, the Party for Progress and Socialism (PPS), the Socialist Democratic Party (PSD) and Al Ahd party have decided to form a single group at the house of representatives (lower chamber of the parliament), in a move that "places the nation's supreme interest above all partisan calculations."
Al Ahd party, which obtained five seats at the House, said it will be joining the Socialist Alliance formed by The PPS and the PSD. The PPS obtained 11 seats while the PSD won 6 seats.
A party needs at least 12 representatives to form a parliamentary group.
The three parties say in a joint release, they have decided to "coordinate their action and endeavor with resolve to contribute to consolidating the forces of progress and modernity around a democratic and modern, strong and attractive bloc" to meet the people's legitimate economic and social aspirations.
After they expressed satisfaction at the honesty and transparency that marked last September 27 legislative elections, the three parties describe the polls as "an important step in deepening democracy and opens the way for Morocco's access to a stage of consolidation of the rule of law and credible representative institutions."
