Mubarak talks with Sudanese president on Eritrea involvement with the rebels
Egypt-Sudan, Politics, 10/7/2002
Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak Saturday received a phone call from Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir during which the situation in south Sudan and ongoing contacts to activate the ceasefire initiative were discussed.
The telephone conversation also dealt with a number of issues of joint interest.
Bashir informed Mubarak of latest military developments on Sudan's eastern border and the involvement of the Eritrean regime in supporting rebel forces at the military, political and media levels.
Sudanese Foreign Minister Moustafa Osman Ismail told a press conference in Khartoum Saturday that the Sudanese government will file complaints against Eritrea before the U.N. Security Council, the Arab League and the African Union (AU) for its military support to the Sudanese opposition and even Eritrea's direct involvement in an attack on Sudan's eastern border.
"The Sudanese Armed Forces are capable of protecting Sudan's security and confronting Eritrea and the rebel opposition," The Sudanese Foreign Minister said.
"The Eritrean regime has foiled all attempts to launch normalization," He said.
Ismail said he felt optimistic following statements by the Kenyan peace envoy that Machakos talks would be resumed on October 14
