Bahrain proposes sending a Gulf delegation to Iraq
Bahrain-Iraq, Politics, 10/5/2002
Bahrain on Friday proposed sending a delegation from the Gulf states to Baghdad, Iraq, in order to discuss "means of getting out of the current bottleneck" despite the fact that Bahrain's crown prince and commander of defense forces Sheikh Hamad Bin Issa al-Khaleifa criticized the Iraqi President Saddam Hussein saying he "succeeded in dividing the Arab homeland."
In a statement to the Egyptian daily al-Ahram issued on Friday, the Bahraini prime minister Sheikh Khaleifah Bin Salman al-Khaleifah called on the Gulf states to convene a meeting to form a delegation chaired by one of its leaders and "go to meet with our brothers in Iraq in order to discuss means of eliminating the current bottleneck." He considered that any attack against Iraq will be "catastrophic on the Gulf and the Arab region." The Bahraini prime minister questioned "Is it acceptable that we accept one Arab country to be occupied by one country or foreign countries." He continued "if we accept that, we have then to accept and expect other Arab countries to be occupied."
The Bahraini crown prince strongly criticized the Iraqi president, noting that Saddam Hussein considers himself as "a representative of the Arab world impulse, and anyone who differs with him is an enemy for the Arab and Islamic nation, and this perception is a grave mistake." He added that "Saddam Hussein has succeeded in partitioning the Arab region."
