American- Israeli military coordination to attack Iraq, UN inspectors chief reaches an agreement with Baghdad
Iraq, Politics, 10/2/2002
The chairman of the UN disarmament inspectors Hans Blix on Tuesday in Vienna announced that the UN and Iraq have agreed on arrangements for the return back of the UN disarmament inspectors to Iraq and that the inspectors can have access to all positions.
Blix said that Iraq has agreed to the measures relating to supplies, financing and transport concerning the inspectors's mission according to UN set lists. He said that the Iraqis accepted all inspection rights stated in the UN Security Council resolutions.
Meantime, Israeli news reports said that the American attack against Iraq is expected within the two coming weeks and that Gen. Amous Yaroun, the director of the Israeli defense ministry on Tuesday started a visit to Washington for that purpose.
Meantime, The US administration said in Tuesday that it still hopes for the release of a UN resolution concerning Iraq. The spokesman for the White House said that the American position towards Iraq has not changed. The Israeli daily Yediot Ahronot said that the visit to the US of Gen. Yaroun was scheduled after two weeks but was paid earlier because of the accelerated American preparations to attack Iraq.
The paper added that Yaroun headed on top of a large delegation in order to discuss with the US defense department preparations for the attack which might be within the two coming weeks, noting that these information played a role in the Israeli decision to suddenly lift the siege imposed on the headquarters of Yasser Arafat in Ramullah without arresting the 20 Palestinians who were with him.
In response to the American position, Iraq has stressed that it will not deal with any new decision issued by the UN Security Council and that Baghdad will not give up its legitimate rights.
The Iraqi deputy prime minister Tareq Aziz has stressed that the American attack will inflict damages not only against Iraq but also on all the region. He said that Iraq is committed to the UN Security Council resolutions and the UN inspectors mission to make sure that Iraq is free from mass destruction weapons.
