Yemen, Local, 10/2/2002

Two of the children of the speaker of the Yemeni parliament Sheikh Abdullah al-Ahmar were jailed for investigation at the order to the attorney general following fire exchange which resulted in killing four persons on Sunday in the surrounding of the British embassy in Sanaa.

The Yemeni official news agency said on Tuesday that the Attorney General gave orders to jail each of Hussein and Hashem al-Ahmar on charges of attacking the security men while performing their duty and of violating the social norms.

The agency added that other children of Sheikh al-Ahmar were due to be brought before the court on Tuesday. They are Hashed, Hameed, Mazhaj and Qahtan to be interrogated over the incident.

A fire exchange took place on Sunday in the surrounding of the British embassy in Sanaa when an armed group including children, guards and escorts of Abdullah al-Ahmar tried to break into one security barrier near the building of the British embassy by using force.
