The Jordanian king in Kuwait; debt cancellation
Kuwait-Jordan, Politics, 10/1/2002
The Jordanian King Abdullah II on Monday paid a visit to Kuwait during which he discussed with Kuwait's Amir Sheikh Jaber al-Ahmad al-Jaber al-Sabah latest developments in the Palestinian territories and the American threats to direct a military attack against Iraq.
In a statement to the Kuwaiti News agency before his meeting with Sheikh Jaber, the Jordanian king said he will discuss with the ruler of Kuwait means of supporting bilateral relations which "enjoy remarkable level," noting that "Jordan considers Kuwait's security as part of its own security and the Arab security in general."
The Jordanian king called for "intensifying" Arab and international efforts in order to avoid directing an American strike against Iraq. He warned that the "situation is very grave." There are still Kuwaiti politicians who oppose the normalization of relations fully with Jordan which seeks to return back thousands of the Jordanian workers to Kuwait, which they had left during the second Gulf war ( the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait).
Members of the Kuwaiti Ummah council ( parliament) inquired of the government about reports saying that Kuwait might drop debts by Amman worth 60 million dollars, and to provide Jordan with new aid in order to withstand the economic hardships in case an attack is launched against Iraq.
This is, however, the fourth visit to be held by the Jordanian king to Kuwait since he assumed power in Jordan in February 1999. King Abdullah is accompanied by the chairman of the royal court Fayez al-Trawenah and the foreign minister Marwan Muasher.
