Al-Shara receives Italian, Russian delegations: renew rejection to striking Iraq

The Syrian deputy prime minister and foreign minister, Farouk al-Shara, on Thursday received the Italian deputy foreign minister Alfredo Mantica and members of the accompanying delegation.
The meeting was attended by the deputy foreign minister Walid al-Mu'allim, the director of international conferences and organizations at the foreign ministry and the Italian ambassador in Damascus.
Discussions during the meeting dealt with the atmosphere of tension prevailing in the region due to the continued Israeli attacks against the Palestinians in the occupied territories and the campaigns of threats to attack Iraq.
In this regard, the foreign minister noted the responsibility of the international community to put an end to the Israeli aggressive policies. He renewed Syria's rejection to any aggression aiming at undermining Iraq's unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity. He also underlined the importance of the UN as a term of reference in dealing with all international issues.
Al-Shara also called for avoiding double standards, stressing that the credibility of the United Nations is reflected in embarking on one criterion in implementing international resolutions.
Al-Shara on Thursday afternoon received the chief of the Russian diplomatic academy. The meeting was attended by the director of the east Europe department at the foreign ministry and the Russian ambassador in Damascus.
Discussions dealt with latest regional and international developments. They also discussed scientific and academic cooperation between the two countries.
Meantime, the Russian ambassador conveyed the decision of the Russian academy council to award al-Shara with a doctorate of honor as an appreciation for his remarkable efforts at the international arena.
