United Nations loss of credibility; Palestine vs Iraq
Regional, Politics, 9/24/2002
The Arab League on Monday called on the UN to "immediately" interfere in order to ensure an international protection for the Palestinian people, and to end the siege imposed on the Palestinian presidency headquarters in Ramullah.
A statement by the Arab League (AL) council, after its extraordinary meeting called for by Libya at the level of permanent representative, said that the continued Israeli brutal aggression against the Palestinians makes it the responsibility of the UN and its secretary general to immediately interfere to halt the aggression and ensure international protection for the Palestinians."
It added that the Israeli aggression also makes the US administration directly responsible to stop the policy of the double standard (Iraq vs Palestine) in the US preventing resolutions by the UN security council to protect the Palestinians (as opposed to its promotingresolutions for war against Iraq).
The Arab League said "This makes the US lose its role as an honest mediator in the peace process." The statement also called on the international community to interfere immediately in order "to end the siege imposed on the Palestinian people and the PA presidency, to pullout from all cities, villages and camps and to honor signed agreements and international laws."
The participants stressed "the legitimate right of the Palestinian people to resist the Israeli occupation, hail their steadfastness and appeal to all Arab people to continue all forms of material and morale support to foster their steadfastness."
Worthy mentioning that Libya had called for the convening of the emergency meeting of the Arab foreign minister to discuss "developments of the grave conditions on the Palestinian territories and besieging the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat."
Meantime, in a statement, the Gulf Cooperation Council member states denounced "the escalated Israeli aggression against the Palestinian people reflected in the tough siege at the headquarters of the Palestinian President Yasser Arafat in Ramullah by the Israeli soldiers."
