Al-Mustaqbil: A quartet Arab summit expected in Sharm Esh Sheikh
Regional, Politics, 9/21/2002
The Lebanese daily al-Mustaqbil said Friday that intensive Arab contacts will be held within the coming days between the leaders of Syria, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia in order to discuss the Iraqi situation.
The paper added that a concern has been prevailing in the four states over the possibility of the American military action despite Iraq's unconditional consent to the return of the UN inspectors.
The paper quoted Arab sources as saying that a proposal was made to convene a quartet summit to be attended by Syrian Presidents Bashar al-Assad and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, the Jordanian King Abdullah and the Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz in the resort city of Sharm Esh Sheikh in Egypt, and that the final decision has not been made yet on convening the meeting.
The paper said that Egypt prefers bilateral meetings among the four Arab leaders, and has not ruled out convening the quartet summit if the Iraqi- American crisis escalates.
The paper added that President al-Assad and Mubarak may meet during the few coming days.
