Arafat appeals to Arab leaders; Mubarak says Israeli escalation encourages desperation
Palestine-Egypt, Politics, 9/21/2002
Palestinian authority chairman Yasser Arafat made telephone calls from his besieged headquarters in Ramullah with several Arab leaders during which he urged them to move to halt Israel's aggression and crimes.
Meantime, the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak warned against the escalation made by Israel in retaliation to the "Martyrdom operations," noting that this will encourage more revenge acts.
The Egyptian TV said that during the telephone conversation with Arafat, Mubarak warned against the "results of the military acts which encourage more acts of revenge and the implications of that in undermining the opportunities to move towards for reaching a solution that can contain the grave conditions between the two sides." The source added that Arafat and Mubarak "exchanged views concerning the Palestinian views on measures that can be taken to stop the invasion and destruction acts practiced against the Palestinians."
The two sides "discussed the joint Arab move at the regional and international arenas and the intensive efforts carried out by President Mubarak since Thursday evening through personal contacts and the urgent messages he extended at the regional level." Arafat also made telephone calls with the Moroccan king the Tunisian President and with the Danish foreign minister whose country is presiding over the current rotating presidency of the European Union.
