Iranian air maneuvers near the Iraqi borders
Iraq-Iran, Politics, 9/21/2002

The Iranian daily al-Quds said Thursday that a unit of the Iranian air force is preparing to carry out air maneuvers in a border area with Iraq to the Western part of the country.

Gen. Darius Yazdanvar told the paper that "leaders of the planes are preparing to make maneuvers during two weeks." He added that these maneuvers will be taking place near Hamdan city ( 200 Km from the border) or near Deizfoul city ( 85 Km from the Iraqi borders.)

On the other hand, the Iranian Gen. explained that "advanced radar systems of 500 Km range" were deployed in several areas of Kharasan province ( to the north east) where the said unit is stationed.

On Tuesday, the Iranian defense minister Ali Shamakhani called on the US not "exceed the red lines" areas between Iran and Iraq in case an attack is made against Iraq, stressing that the Iranian armed forces "are ready to face any possibility."
