Al-Naas: Ruling party in Yemen accused of damaging al-Islah party; using public funds
Yemen, Politics, 9/18/2002

The speaker of the Yemeni parliament Sheikh Abdullah Bin Hussein al-Ahmad, who is also the chairman of the opposition al-Islah ( reforms ) party has accused the ruling People's Congress Party of seeking to weaken his party and damage it.

He said that the government of the People's Congress government spends large sums of money to "terrify" opposition members. He indicated that there is no difference between the government and the People's Congress party, noting that the People's Congress party uses state's treasury money to achieve its objectives.

In a press interview published by al-Naas ( the people) daily which is closed to his party, Sheikh al-Ahmar said that the relation linking "al-Islah party" to the ruling party is in a critical condition, describing this relations as "not good" at the meantime.

He stressed that the deterioration of the relations between the rulling Congress party and Islah party will not affect his personal relation with the Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh who presides over the ruling party.

He added that the Yemeni coalition for al-Islah is not expected to get many seats in the next parliamentary elections due to be held in April 2003, and this is because of its weak potentials as well as the attempt of the general people's congress to achieve a majority in the next elections.
